i get my preferences from my mom, having grown up with her listening to the real, old bluegrass all my life.
but i like many of the new artists out, too.
Nickel Creek
Allison Krauss & Union Station
Bill Monroe
Roy Acuff
The Lewis Family
Mac Wiseman
Flatt & Scruggs (their version of Foggy Mountain Breakdown is my favorite)

Re: favorite bluegrass artist(s)
Mon, April 19, 2004 - 5:31 PMi am very new to this genre of music. i am eager to hear and take in as much as i can. ive heard some roy acuff (i love great speckled bird in spite of the fact that its about the bible) can you reccomend anything else that has that same almost hawaiin sound? i also love uncle dave macon...im not sure thats bluegrass. im not sure of the distinctions between bluegrass, folk, old timey, americana, etc. (does anyone care to enlighten me?) i am absolutely in love with the cherokee ramblers (listening to them right now) i basically joined this tribe (along with a couple of other similar tribes) to expand my western horizons. under the right conditions, this girl is a cowgirl. or a farmers daughter. yeah. something like that. much love...christina -

Re: favorite bluegrass artist(s)
Tue, April 20, 2004 - 8:39 AMone of the biggest distinctions of bluegrass music is that there are no drums. other than that, i think most of what makes bluegrass unique is pretty obvious - originated in the rural south and appalachia; prominant instruments are fiddle, mandolin, steel guitar (which lends that hawaiian sound you referred to); songs about homestead, biblical themes, the depression; etc.
i've heard of uncle dave macon but i don't think i've heard any of his music.
almost any roy acuff, especially the really old stuff, will have steel guitar; look for that instrument and you will find the "hawaiian" sound you're looking for.
i'm no music expert by any stretch of the imagination so if i've gotten my facts mixed up, please forgive me. good luck!

Re: favorite bluegrass artist(s)
Wed, April 28, 2004 - 11:51 AMHi there, I'm new here, just found this tribe and am excited about it.
As for favorite artists, my most recent are John Hartford and Bob Carlin. If you listen to John Hartford ever, he actually explains a lot about what bluegrass and old timey music is in his songs, especially The Hamilton Ironworks. He has a unique style of talking/singing during the songs, but really packs in the information. Bob Carlin used to play with him and is now kind of trying to carry on John Hartford's method of passing the music and information on generation to generation, it's really interesting. He's not as smooth as John Hartford yet, he's just starting to do it since John Hartford died, but I think he'll get it down.
also really like...
Doc Watson
Bill Monroe
Mike Marshall & Chris Thile (together on mandolin)
Tim O'Brien (has grown on me)
Flatt and Scruggs
Tony Rice
Del McCoury Band
as far as newer bands I really like Foghorn String Band, anyone familiar with them?

also listen to a lot of the Tallboys. They are a local seattle band, just getting their feet off the ground, but they are really really good. Lean a bit towards old timey.

Re: favorite bluegrass artist(s)
Fri, April 30, 2004 - 11:11 AMAwesome! Thanks for the tips, Justine. I tend to gravitate more towards the classics, myself. Listening to the stuff my mom and my grandmother listens to - Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, Acuff, etc.
But it's always good to be in touch with newer bands, too. I look forward to checking out some of the artists you mentioned. -

Re: favorite bluegrass artist(s)
Fri, April 30, 2004 - 12:15 PMgreat, let me know what you think.
I have lost a lot of interest in the newer "jamgrass" type bands that are out there. I think the two bands I listed lean more towards old time, I think they really capture some traditional sound while doing their own thing which really appeals to me.
I'm always interested in listening to new stuff as well (or old stuff that's new to me).
