Bluegrass 2005

The year's not over yet but I thought I'd make some findings:

1) Thanks to Bob Artis' book, Bluegrass, found out who Bill Monroe was and why he's so important to bluegrass

2) Just a couple of weeks ago listened to Monroe's music for the first time (and I'm still listening)

a) for some reason I really like Molly & Tenbrooks
b) as well as his high, lonesome sound

3) Found out it's easier to play old time than bluegrass but acquiring the sound and style of each will take time, esp. playing a tempo

4) Found out that serious bluegrass musicians know the history of bluegrass and have studied their predecessors' styles

5) It's not enough to take lessons and practice; I gotta listen to early bluegrass music, esp. to Bill Monroe & the Blue Grass Boys, Flatt & Scruggs, Stanley Bros., and many, many more

Have any of you heard about this organization? It's a collective of music archivists who are in the process of preserving a bunch of old recordings that belonged to Tut Taylor. I've heard that some of the tapes are so old that they actually have to be baked in the oven before they can be transferred to a digital medium. The SPPS also has a "partner" program with some contemporary bands and they offer live shows for download if you have an FTP client.

The website is at: http://www.thespps.org

Looking forward to almost every act, and especially Vince Herman's late night show on Friday. Speaking of Vince, there's also a new Leftover Salmon tribe in case you weren't aware. Just because they're done, doesn't mean we are! If you're headed to Colorado, make sure to hear The Wilders and Old Crow Medicine Show! See ya there... :)

Ralph Stanley concert last night

Went to see Ralph and the Clinch Mountain Boys last night in Clintwood, VA (where Ralph's museum is, just a short ways from his old home in McClure/Coeburn). He does an annual concert at Heritage Hall at the senior citizen center as a benefit for the residents. The nice thing about it is that it's a small place, holds maybe 100 people tops - and has a nice intimate feel to it.

Another thing that made it different is that this is his community - and these are his neighbors and fellow church members. So he invited a couple of the old regular babist church singers up to sing some hymns. One man in particular was spectacular - Frank Newsome was his name. Awful mournful.

At any rate, it was a great show - lasted 2 1/2 hours. Nathan Stanley, Ralph's grandson, played pretty well on the mandolin - especially for being so young, maybe 12?

Ralph mentioned two albums coming out this year. One is all Carter Family tunes. Will be out this coming fall.

Old Time Bluegrass Music in Seattle

Hi there, for those of you in Seattle, there is an awesome Old Time Bluegrass band playing this Thursday night at Connor Byrnes Pub, starting at 9. They are a fairly new local band that are a cross between old time and bluegrass. They have a very traditional sound, includes mandolin, fiddle, guitar, banjo and upright bass. Play a lot of old fiddle tunes, and quite a few originals. Also, opening up is a traditional Mexican folk duo on guitar and violin. It will be a great show, you should come and have some fun if you're in town. You can listen to the Tallboys on their web page at www.thetallboys.net. I tried to post this as an "event" but it didn't work, so I'm just doing it this way. Hope to see some of you there. Take care, Justine
but i like many of the new artists out, too.

Nickel Creek
Allison Krauss & Union Station
Bill Monroe
Roy Acuff
The Lewis Family
Mac Wiseman
Flatt & Scruggs (their version of Foggy Mountain Breakdown is my favorite)
